Upcoming Downtown Events

This weekend will be the “unofficial” kick off of the downtown Sanford holiday season!  This Sunday afternoon will be the open house for Floral Designs by Eddie and The Design Team.  I enjoy this open house every year and they never disappoint!

The following weekend, November 8 and 9, will be the official “Downtown Sanford Merchants Open House.”  More information should be in The Sanford Herald next week.  I will post more details closer to the event, but for the Shops of Steele Street open house, which, of course, houses our Amy’s Confection Company open house, we will be sampling a wide variety of our products including our Mr. Amy’s Dip line, offering door prizes, and previewing our 2009 holiday line.

For the first time in a very long time, our Christmas parade will now be on a Sunday afternoon.  I am really excited about the change and hope it goes well.  It is scheduled for Sunday, November 23 and more information can be found on the Chamber of Commerce website

After the parade, Thanksgiving will be just days away…and then the holiday season is really on!!

So many exciting events!

There has been a lot going on over the last month or so and just not enough time to blog about it!

The first thing I had all intentions of blogging about was the Sanford Second Century reveal party.  It was amazing!!  First of all, I love the new logo, and the poem that goes along with it literally made me cry as they read it.  I honestly love being a Sanfordian (if you would have told me that when I was 15 I probably would have laughed in your face — I thought I was getting out of the town fast!) and think our downtown is morphing into a fabulous “destination!”  Secondly, the band was fabulous — The Band of Oz out of Raleigh.  I had heard of them, but really did not know a thing about them…we were really surprised!  It was hands down the best concert I have ever heard in Depot Park.  I can’t wait until they are performing in/near Sanford again!

Next came the CIS Gala.  As usual, we had a great time.  We served Carolina Cake Truffles, cheesecake bites, pecan tassies, lemon bars, and almond English toffee.  I always love that evening because it gives us a chance to spend some time with a lot of our regular customers that I don’t always get to see in person.  I also finally met fellow blogger Emily Page in person and really enjoyed chatting with her — I felt like I had known her forever!

One of the new additions to the gala this year was Myra’s Kitchen — and she was a rock star!  She and Buddy served meatloaf (the best ever!), chicken and dumplins (which Jonathan said were to die for!), peach crisp (which I was sad I didn’t get to try, but I have had it in the restaurant and it is delicious), and one of my favorites — her cornbread muffins.  We were set up within earshot of each other, so I heard a lot of “where are you located” and “I will definitely be eating there!”

This past Saturday was ARToberfest in downtown Sanford, which I think was a great success for its 2nd year — especially considering the weather.  We had our first really cool day, and it was windy!  The wind made for a long day, but overall it was great.  We completely sold out of toffee and truffles, and I finally got to meet Lindsay from Anyone Hungry and her new hubbie!  They are the cutest couple ever and so sweet!  I was also excited to see Kim Pritt (who has to be the best Sanford resident ever — she is at everything!).

Cannot.Believe.He.Is.15.

NOTE:  I apparently hit save instead of publish with this last week, so it is a little late!

I’m feeling older than ever today! There is a funny thing about being a step-mom (or at least the kind of step-mom that I am!)…there is a point where you actually forget that you did not birth those children — and that in some cases it would have been impossible. Jonathan is a a few several years older than I am. So, of course, his kids are older. After my divorce, I swore I would not date anyone with kids — especially older kids! All you hear are the horror stories of blended families, and I just did not feel like I could deal with that at that point in my life.

Funny how God had different plans for us! Little did I know that the most wonderful man would walk into my life with what?!?! Two.children?? Not one, but two. And not toddlers or preschoolers, but a 17 and 11 year old! My initial instinct was to run, not walk, do not pass go, do not collect $200…but get the heck out of there! Boy am I glad I can’t run very fast! Little did I know that those 2 boys would become 2 of the greatest blessings ever bestowed on me by God.

Unfortunately, with Brandon at age 17, I missed many of the milestones in his early life; however, I did get to experience graduation — which was a wonderful day! But with Phillip, so much changes from 11 to 15 (more than I ever really thought about or realized). He is not the same little boy he was when I met him. And I remember the day I met him quite vividly. We did not want to introduce me to Jonathan’s boys until we knew that our relationship was solid. Jonathan made a very big deal over the fact that Phillip may not warm up to me immediately, that he would probably be pretty quiet, and that he would probably be a little timid. Wrong! He was “on” from moment one. He talked and entertained me and made me laugh…he is still entertaining me and making me laugh to this day!

I am so proud of the young man he is becoming. I am so proud of the stepson he is to me. They both could have rejected me — especially him (considering he and I have always had to spend lots of time together while Jonathan is at work; therefore, putting me in a strong disciplinary position), but they accepted me with open arms, and I honestly do love them like they were my own. Over the past few months, he has started guitar lessons and found his singing voice, and he is becoming quite the musician. He is a “good guy” and that makes me happy!

In just a few short hours, he’ll be going to get his driver’s permit —AAAAHHH! I am so very nervous excited!

Random Thoughts

I’ve really neglected my blog, but today I feel like I have so many ideas running through my head…

1.  Months ago, I ordered my free Senseo coffee maker thanks to a post by The Mama.  I went several months without even taking it out of the box, but now with my new job and crazy second and third shift hours, I hate to admit just how much it has been used!  It is actually set up conveniently on the corner of my desk, and I just hit the button when I feel like I can’t keep my eyes open another second!  It makes great coffee and some of the flavored pods are excellent!

2.  Last Sunday, we made the decision to join Brickcity Community Church!  That is a huge decision for us.  Both of us were very involved in our churches in our “past lives” before we met.  I especially had a very hard time leaving my church (where I had been the music director for two years) during my divorce.  Since then, we have searched and searched and just hadn’t found the right fit, but now we have.  I didn’t get to go to church yesterday, because I was sick and Jonathan went to homecoming at his parents’ church, so it was the first Sunday we’ve missed since we been attending BCC, and we were both so sad!

3.  My top secret project (TSP) is still in the works.  I hope to be able to announce it to the world in the next week or two!

4.  The 2nd Century Project is being unveiled this Thursday at Depot Park.  I had already signed up for a business seminar, so I will not be able to attend, but I am so excited to see what they have planned for Sanford/Lee County.  I think this is definitely a step in the right direction for our town!

5.  The guitar…a few months ago, Phillip started learning to play the guitar.  He has actually gotten really, really good at it and is progressing every day.  Luckily, his taste in music is pretty much in line with Jonathan and myself, so we enjoy what he is playing.  We have also discovered what a great voice he has.  I need a tamborine :)

6.  The only upcoming show I have for the confection company this month is ARToberfest in Downtown Sanford on October 18.  I think it will be a great show with lots of great artists and crafters.  Booths are still available.

7.  For the past 2 years, a highlight of fall has been the Communities in Schools Gala.  This will be the 3rd Annual Gala for the Children featuring a Taste of Lee County.  I offer a variety of desserts at the event and enjoy the opportunity to spend some time with a lot of my customers and some of Sanford’s nicest residents!  Visit Kim Pritt’s blog for more information.  If you only attend one social event this season, this is the one!!

8.  October is quickly approaching.  Remember that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  Beginning later this week, I will offer a line of “Pink Ribbon” chocolates at Amy’s Confection Company in Shops of Steele Street.

9.  I’m also working on a new website for the Confection Company using a WordPress base, and it is driving me nuts!!

I think that’s everything for now!!!

I.Love.Trader.Joe’s

We talk about going to Trader Joe’s every time we are in Cary, but somehow we never make it there!  It is just a turn we rarely seem to make.  Friday afternoon poor Jonathan was a great sport as he drove me from one end of Wake County to the other searching for new suppliers for the Confection Company.  As we all know, with gas prices rising, shipping cost are rising, which is really starting to hurt.  I know to some the logic would be…you are going to spend more in gas driving all over looking for local suppliers than you would in shipping costs, but that really isn’t the case for us.  We typically make a couple of trips to Cary per month anyway to go to Sam’s, AC Moore, etc.  We used to make a couple of trips per month for dinner, but those don’t really happen anymore!

So, Friday we decided to go in search for some new wholesalers/suppliers, do our usual Cary/Raleigh shopping, and go out to dinner.  In the process, we made our first trip to Trader Joe’s.  Oh.my.gosh!!!!  I love it — we both love it!  We didn’t buy a ton, because I had just made a grocery trip Friday morning and we had several more stops to make, so we couldn’t buy anything cold/frozen, but we did buy some “junk food!”  The “less guilt” chips are to die for!  We have had a long obsession with kettle-cooked chips.  I could eat them every single day if I didn’t think I would end up as big as one side of the house!  These were by far some of the best ever, and SO much cheaper than our “regular” grocery stores.  The customer service was great (which was also SO much better than the place I bought groceries that morning and walked out irritated as usual!).  I can’t wait to go back soon (with my cooler this time, of course)!!

Melissa’s Wedding and the Biggest Cake Ever!

Well, my sister and new brother-in-law’s wedding has finally come and gone!  My camera has been acting a little crazy, so some of my pics are a little fuzzy, but here are a few until I get my CD with the “good pictures!”

My sister…

This is at the home the groom’s grandmother.

It’s rare that I have a picture with all four of us — me and my boys!

I’m now a proud aunt!  This is me with my new niece, Sarah…

…and her twin brother, my new nephew, Noah!

My cousin Dixie…horsing around…killing time before the wedding started…she was my comic relief!

Those handsome guys waited so patiently through the hours of photos!

This was the “cupcake bar,” which was a huge hit with the “under 12″ crowd!  They each iced their own cupcakes and could top them with gummy worms, M&Ms, sprinkles…  My fear was that they would all end up covered in icing, but they didn’t even get the tablecloth dirty!

THE cake!  I feel like we have talked about this cake FOREVER!  Melissa wouldn’t pick a design, so in the end this is what I designed for her.  She had no idea what it looked like until she walked in the door at the reception.  I think she was very pleasantly surprised!  I was very happy with the outcome!

Another angle of the cake – Jonathan built the beautiful stand for me!  He did a great job!

Overall, it was a great wedding.  The ceremony was sweet and beautiful, and the reception was great fun.  Aaron Gaines did a great job with the food, and we all danced way more than we should have!!

The Carolina Cake Truffle Story

So it hit me just now as I was reading Lindsay’s blog “Anyone Hungry” that most of my great customers don’t know the story behind my Carolina Cake Truffles.  Lindsay and Emily Page taste tested some cake truffles today and, to my delight, loved them (you can read about the experience here).  I am always excited to hear reviews after someone tastes them for the first time — it makes all the hard work that goes into them worth every minute!

In 2000 or 2001, I took my first cake decorating class ever.  Medical transcription is pretty much the same day in and day out, and I really needed a creative outlet.  I had always enjoyed baking, but oddly I had never (yes, never) decorated a cake.  I finally bought a shiny new Wilton Blue’s Clues pan and gave it a shot for a family birthday.  I followed the directions exactly, and it took HOURS!  My kitchen was a wreck, but the final product was great and everyone loved it.  The next morning, I signed up for a class.

My sister and I made the trek each week to Southern Pines for our classes and I truly loved it.  She made it through the first set of classes, but really had no desire to continue.  I went on my own until I had completed everything my instructor had to offer.  I spent the next couple of years making A LOT of cake — cake for family, friends, church functions, work functions…anything that required a cake!  And with each cake came “cake scraps” (I know it sounds appetizing and glamorous)!!  Cake scraps typically would consist of the “dome” on the top of each cake that would have to be cut off to make the cake level.  If I made a lot of cake that week, then there were lots of scraps.  I just could not bring myself to throw them away, and eventually started stockpiling them in the freezer thinking I would find some purpose for them.

After a couple of years of baking for family and friends, I decided to have my kitchen inspected and have a real business.  Things started out slowly at first, but after a while, I was busier and busier — and guess what grew…the cake scraps!!  Everytime I threw them away, I felt so guilty that perfectly good cake was going to waste.

OK – if you are still reading after all this blah, blah, blah, this is the birth of the Carolina Cake Truffle – Finally one day I set out to find a use for these Ziploc bags full of cake.  I tried several different things, but finally tried mixing them with a secret ingredient (hey, I can’t tell all my secrets!) and rolling them in powdered sugar.  This was quite tasty, but something was still missing.

While dipping some chocolate-covered strawberries, I decided I would try to dip the balls of cake also.  Oh.my.goodness!!  It was delicious.  Everyone who would visit my house was forced to try them, and every person said “wow, you should sell these.”  I didn’t think too much of it at the time.  I would take them to parties and serve them to guests, and that was it.

Fast forward a year or so…boy meets girl, etc., etc., etc., and I married this wonderful man, AKA Mr. Amy now (ha!), who was more supportive than I could have ever imagined!  He encouraged me to start selling them.  The first “cake balls” were sold in plain white bakery boxes and were really nothing fancy.  Kim Pritt mentioned the folks that she works with buying them, and boy did they ever!!  Those ladies really got the ball rolling for me.  From there, a local gift shop wanted to sell them, which also brought another loyal customer base.  It was then that we decided they needed a new name.  Cake balls just didn’t get it…so, being Carolina born and bred, they became Carolina Cake Truffles.  They were revamped with a new shape and the packaging that we use today.

Fast forward again to 2008…of course, I can no longer use cake scraps to make the truffles.  We bake huge cakes that are then transformed the next morning into truffles.  At our Shops of Steele Street location, people actually call in the morning to “reserve” their truffles to make sure they get them before they run out that day.  I can’t believe there is actually a “Carolina Cake Truffle Waiting List!”  A lot of work goes into each little truffle, as they are completely hand-crafted from start to finish, and they are truly a labor of love – love for my product and my customers.  I have met so many people and made so many friends thanks to these truffles!

Since opening our online store last year, our Carolina Cake Truffles have been all over the world!!  They have actually been to more states and more countries than I have!

An old friend who I hadn’t talked with in years happened to pop in the shop a month or two ago.  She then sent the sweetest email about how much she loved the truffles.  Since then, she has sent so many new customers my way, and she says her new project is to get the truffles on Oprah!  Another long-time truffle customer is also always trying to get me some added press.  I have promised them if either one gets us in a major magazine or on Oprah, then they get free truffles for life!!

Recent Wedding Cakes

I haven’t posted any cake pictures lately.  I have created several over the last month or so that I have been very pleased with.

An All-White Wedding Cake — Most cakes that I do are covered in bright colors and funky shapes.  When a very special customer wanted an all-white cake, I was very excited!  They chose a beautiful design and I was very happy with the end result!

This pink and green cake was from this past weekend.  The bride and I have been discussing her cake for probably two or three years.  I was so excited to see the final design.  I hope she was happy with it!

You can’t really see the details on this cake, but I thought this was a really cool picture.  It was white icing with silver luster swirls and blue ribbon around the base of each tier.  The bride found a beautiful monogram topper that was a beautiful finishing touch!
